There are several kinds of restraining orders. Civil harassment orders seek protection against neighbors, roommates, co-workers, and any person with whom you have no personal relationship. They're requested in the Civil Department of the San Diego Superior Court.
Domestic Restraining orders are sought in the Family Court. They are to seek protection against people with whom you have or had a close relationship, such as a current or ex-spouse, an ex, boyfriend, girlfriend, relatives, and those with whom you were involved more than just a "roommate". The domestic violence restraining orders are also requested to protect dependent children.
There are also restraining orders for dependent adults, or elder abuse restraining order. The other kinds of restraining orders such as to protect property or prevent one from disposing of things.
